Koira is a wholesome tale of friendship where you and your new puppy traverse a musical forest, solve ancient puzzles, befriend woodland creatures, and try to find your way home.
Avoid danger along the way, as hunters lurk in the shadows...
Koira is supremely effective in communicating the passion and fervor of our hero. It is also successful in teaching the player important gameplay mechanics simply by playing games with the dog.
I've touched upon the visuals a bit, but Koira is a very pretty game, coming across as a storybook come to life. The expressions and animations do a lot to convey the emotion of the scene and the personalities of both Koira and their pooch. As a debut game from the studio, it's an impressive start that makes them a studio to watch out for.
Where Koira truly shines is in its adorable gameplay moments. Building snowpeople, playing tug-of-war with Kevin, and petting him whenever I wanted (add this one to Can You Pet The Dog?) — all highlights. The wildlife also reacts in delightful ways, like squirrels absolutely losing their tiny minds when you get too close. I could also put a hat or flowers on Kevin to decorate him, and even — yes, I know I’m evil — throw snowballs at him. Before you judge me, my character laughed, so clearly the devs knew we’d do this.
